Functional Health

You deserve more than
“your labs are normal.”

Doctors are trained for sick care. My job is finding out why your body feels like a stranger after 40.

The short answer

Functional health looks for the root cause of your symptoms, not just whether you have a diagnosable disease.

I look at your labs and your symptoms together, find the patterns behind how you actually feel, and build a plan around what your body needs. Not managing symptoms. Addressing what's underneath them.

Two different jobs

The ER is great.
It's not built for this.

If I'm in a car accident, I want the ER. If I'm sick, I want my doctor. That training is excellent.

It's also not built for a different job: getting to the root cause of why your body feels out of control once you hit 40.

Your doctor's job

  • Rule disease in or out
  • Treat it when it's there

A functional health practitioner's job

  • Understand why your body changed
  • Give you the plan and the tools to feel healthy, energized, and confident

You need both. Not one instead of the other.

Side by side

Same labs.
Two very different reads.

Conventional

  • Treats disease once it's diagnosed
  • Treats symptoms as they arise
  • Doctor directs, you follow
  • Labs test for disease
  • Relies mostly on medication and procedures

Functional

  • Focuses on prevention and optimizing your health
  • Addresses the root cause of symptoms
  • You and your practitioner are partners
  • Labs use ranges with a floor and a ceiling, not just a ceiling
  • Draws from a full toolkit, not just a prescription pad

The three pillars

Food. Strength. Identity.

They run side by side the whole way, and they get more personal as your results come in.

Nourish

How you feed your body

We start with a food log, not a meal plan. I need your real baseline before I change anything.

Food isn't the enemy here. Restriction isn't the strategy.

Build

How you get strong and recover

Resistance training and protein build and keep muscle. Muscle carries your metabolism, your bones, and your independence.

Sleep lives here too. You're building for the next 30 years.

Identity

How you make it stick

The daily habits. The nervous system work. The identity work.

Who you're becoming matters more than what you're losing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

“Life changing. But life changes for me to be a better version of myself.”

Kathleen D.

The tools

Tools. Never the whole strategy.

These aren't pillars. They work because they're built into the pillars.

Labs and Genetics

Guessing isn't a strategy

Your labs and your genetics, read together. Everything starts here. Your results are information, not a diagnosis.

Supplements

Targeted, not trending

Matched to what your labs actually show you need.

Peptides

Amplify the work, never replace it

Tools that amplify the work you're already doing.

Hormone Therapy

Not just hot flashes

Hormones influence bone, brain, and heart health. When it's appropriate, it's evaluated and prescribed by physicians on an independent medical platform.

The good news

Most of it is still in your hands.

When your hormones are shifting, it's easy to feel like none of it is in your hands. Most of it still is.

  • The food you eat
  • The movement you do
  • The thoughts you think
  • The air in your home
  • What's in your kitchen, your skincare, your water

Small changes, stacked over time.
That's what actually lasts.

Real questions, real answers

What women actually ask me.

What is functional health, in one sentence?

Functional health looks for the root cause of your symptoms, not just whether you have a diagnosable disease.

It runs a wider set of tests, then reads your results against functional ranges as well as standard ones. A standard range mostly has a ceiling. Functional ranges have a floor and a ceiling, so a number that's technically normal but sitting at the low end still gets noticed.

From there, it builds a plan around your specific results, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Is this the same as functional medicine?

They share a philosophy. The difference here is a practical one: Modern Midlife Woman is a wellness education and coaching practice, not a medical practice. I do more than identify patterns and build strategy. I coach you through executing it, and adjust the plan as we go. Where medical care belongs in the picture, I partner with an independent medical platform.

Are you against conventional medicine?

Absolutely not. If I'm in a car accident, I want to be seen by an emergency room doctor. If I'm sick, I want to go to my family doctor.

If a lab marker comes back out of range and needs a doctor's attention, I make sure you book the appointment. And I encourage every client to keep her own doctor in the loop on the work we're doing together.

I've been told my labs are normal, but I still don't feel well. Is this for me?

This is exactly for you. That gap, between “nothing's technically wrong” and actually feeling like yourself, is exactly where I work.

Am I a candidate for this?

You may be a good fit if you're dealing with weight that won't budge, especially around your middle. Hot flashes, heavy or irregular periods, or both. Exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix. Brain fog, mood swings, or a shorter fuse than usual. Bloating, gut issues, or cravings that don't make sense. If any of that sounds familiar, this is worth a conversation.

Do I need labs done, and do I need them all at once?

Yes, labs are where we start. There's no version of this that works from guessing. You don't need every test on day one. We start with the panel that makes sense for your symptoms and history, and add more only if what we find points somewhere specific.

Do I need to be sick to benefit from this?

No. Some of the women I work with have real, diagnosed issues. Others just know something's off and can't get a straight answer. Both are exactly who this is for.

Why do so many women discover functional health during perimenopause?

Because this is usually the first time doctors stop having answers. You go in with real symptoms, and you walk out with a prescription for birth control, an antidepressant, and told to relax with a glass of wine. That's when women start looking for something deeper.
