Over 40 and Feel Awful With “Normal” Labs? (It’s Not in Your Head)

You’re not crazy.

You finally made the appointment. You got there on time. You listed it all out. The exhaustion. The brain fog. The weight that showed up out of nowhere and settled right around your middle like it pays rent there.

A few days later, the portal pinged. “Everything looks normal.”

And you sat in your car banging your head against the steering wheel thinking, “Then why do I feel this way?”

I know that feeling. At 48, my body felt like a stranger. Anxiety. Brain fog. A scale that kept climbing. I was cold all the time, especially my hands and feet.

I was bloated after I ate anything. And I had meno belly, which is a completely different thing! Yeah, it was a two-for-one gift for my waistline.

When I ran my first functional labs, they showed a gut that was struggling and a thyroid that was trending in the wrong direction.

Finally, something that made sense!

“Not sick” and “working well” are two different things

Your doctor is trained to rule disease in or out. The reference ranges on a standard panel are built wide enough to do exactly that. It’s a good system doing the job it was designed for.

But “no disease found” and “working well” aren’t the same finding.

You can sit inside every range on the page and still have a body that stopped doing the things it used to do. So many of us live in that gap in our forties and fifties. It’s where women get told, “You’re fine,” and we feel gaslighted.

A functional read asks different questions like “Where are you trending?” A number sitting at the low end of normal still gets noticed and discussed.

Where one number misses the story

Take your thyroid.

A basic panel often checks a single marker, TSH, and stops there. TSH stands for thyroid-stimulating hormone.

TSH is your brain telling your thyroid to get to work. It’s the signal. Think of it as the thermostat on your wall. It’s your brain calling for heat. But setting the thermostat to 72 doesn’t mean the furnace is putting any heat out.

So what tells you whether the heat is coming on?

  • T4 is what your thyroid makes. Think of it as the fuel in the tank. Your body can’t use it until it’s converted.
  • T3 is what T4 gets converted into. This is the heat coming out of the vents, and it’s the one your cells use.
  • Reverse T3 looks like T3 but doesn’t do the job. It’s a vent blowing cold air. The more of it your body makes, the less real heat you get.

So the thermostat can be set exactly right while the house is freezing. (Remember my cold hands and feet?)

Your thyroid isn’t the only place this happens. One number gets checked, and the rest of the story gets missed.

And no single marker tells the story alone. It’s in the pattern across them, read alongside your symptoms, your history, and your goals that gives you that “ah ha” moment you have been longing for.

Why guessing gets expensive

Most women don’t come to me first. They come to me after the fifth diet, the supplement stack a friend swore by, and the workout that kept their jeans buttoned in their thirties. (And let’s face it, being young all on its own is like a diet!)

Some of it helped a little. Most of it didn’t stick. That’s not because they didn’t try hard enough. It was all aimed at a guess.

Your labs don’t change the goal. They change the route. Fewer roadblocks. Fewer detours.

You deserve more than “you’re fine”

If your labs say fine and your body says otherwise, trust your body. Then let’s go find out why you feel the way you do.

That’s what I do in my eight-week program. First, I run a full blood panel and a genetic cheek swab.

And then you don’t sit around waiting for results. While they’re processing, you start a 21-day reset that shows you which foods work for your body. Many women notice less bloating, better energy, and looser clothes.

When your labs are back, we sit down together and I walk you through all of it as one story, in plain English, so it finally makes sense.

It’s the conversation most women have been waiting years to have.

Book a Clarity Call with me. We’ll talk about what’s going on in your life, how you’re feeling, the labs we can run, and how I explain them to you. It’s a conversation, not a pitch.
